Background
In the past few years, the high-tech industries, such as semiconductor, electronic, information, communication, photonic, biomedical and energy technology, have grown up vigorously in Taiwan. They will become the core competitive advantages of our country in the twenty-first century. The requirements of lighter, thinner, shorter, and smaller products have induced rigorous demands for high precision of devices and manufacturing equipment and have also promoted a revolution in manufacturing technologies. The trend is towards ultra precision, integration, speed, smartness, digitalization, and miniaturization. In view of the advanced manufacture technologies, Huafan University has established the Advanced Manufacturing Research Center (AMRC) in 2006 to promote research activities in these areas of studies and to equip our graduates with competitive edges and high-tech professionalism.

Objectives
Our mission is to provide a cooperative platform between Huafan University and industrial circles. The executive strategy is to establish a high standard research environment and culture to encourage researchers in each institute and department to be involved in our projects. The objectives of the center are:
 Academic research;
 Cooperation between academy and industry;
 Education spread;
 Industrial service.

Development and Research Foci
To meet the urgent core manufacturing technology requirements of industries, the developmental direction and research foci of the initial stage focus on the applications of the industries of 3C, semiconductor, and energy. Considering the constitute diversities, we will integrate manufacturing technologies, system equipments, design and material analysis, and information system, as shown in Figure 1. The development directions and research foci are intended to be integrated, applicable, sustainable, and extendable.

Organization
To achieve the objectives successfully, AMRC has organized a consultant committee and five mission groups. The functions and members are detailed in the following:

  • Consultant Committee (CC): providing the recommendations of research and development. There are seven to eleven members that include the president, dean of academic affairs, dean of the engineering college and members from both academic and industrial circles.
  • Center Director (CD): a director leads the five mission groups to carry out the missions and achieve the objectives of the center. The present director is Dr. Shenq-Yih Luo, who is also the director of the Department of Mechatronic Engineering.
  • Operation and Management Group (OMG): responsible for setting up the research equipment and management system, coordinating the budget, holding the regular operation and management meeting and working report. The members are Dr. Yuh-Chung Hu and Dr. Kuo-Yi Huang, who are both with the Department of Mechatronic Engineering.
  • Common Lab Group (CLG): responsible for setting up the common laboratory and management system and the maintenance of the equipments. The members are Dr. Jay C. Y. Huang, who is with the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Information and Dr. Huai-Yi Chen, who is with the Department of Electronic Engineering.
  • Industrial-Academic Cooperation Group (IAG): responsible for promoting the cooperation between the industry and academy. The members are Dr. Jhy-Ping Jhanq, who is with the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Information, and Dr. Jong-Zen Huang, who is with the Department of Mechatronic Engineering.
  • Academic Promoting Group (APG): responsible for promoting academic cooperation and research. The members are Dr. Sheng-Chai Chi, who is with the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Information, and Dr. Jyh-Ling Lin, who is with the Department of Electronic Engineering.
  • Education Promoting Group (EPG): responsible for planning, executing, and spreading the education and training course, driving the internet multi-media education, holding conferences and workshops. The members are Dr. Cheng-Chin Hsu and Dr. Guo-Wei Bian, who are both with the Department of Information Management.
